The story line of this movie moves around a local carrom player names Anbu (Played by Dhanush), who unwillingly gets into in a war between two rival gangster groups.

Vada Chennai Plot
The plot of this movie happens in the time period of 1987 – 2003. The opening scene of the movie takes us back to the year 1987, where we see a conversation among four men- Guna (Samuthirakani), Senthil (Kishore), Velu (Pavan), and Pazhani (Dheena). They have shown to have killed a heavyweight gangster and are then discussing about what methods to undertake to supersede his position now.
Almost a year later, these four men are shown to be inside a prison, but they have now become rivals – Guna and Velu on one side whereas Senthil and Pazhani on another side. The scene then shifts to the year 2000 where Anbu (Dhanush) is sentenced to prison on account of getting into a fight with Guna’s henchman Siva (Pavel). In roder to save himself from Guna’s gang that virtually controls one block of the prison, Anbu earns Senthil’s trust and goes on to even join his gang. The story then shifts to the year 1991, where it is shown that Anbu is a skilled carrom player who dreams of playing carom for his state some day. This is also the time when he Padma (Aishwarya Rajesh), a fearless local girl and falls in love with her.
Shifting focus back to the prison, Anbu realizes about the gangster Rajan (Ameer) and takes a stand for his people.
